Look at plans for a pack basket. LL Bean used to stock them in season. They
will hold a decent amount. They will, after a while, conform to your back,
somewhat. They are made of white ash splits. It is possible that you might be
able to find a kit at a boy scout service center (where they have supplies
for
scout troops) or handy craft stores. Some canoe outfitters (traditional ones)
may have them.

Size is measured in pecks, IIRC. They are generally about 17 to 22 inches
high, and round in proportion. There is a leather harness strapped on , and
sometimes a canvas cover or lid.

Certainly John and Sebastian Cabot would have come access them in our period.
Whether they got back Europe is another matter. Champlain would also have
used
them, but he's at the end of our period.
