A Grinder is one of the many terms applied to what in most areas is called a submarine sandwich.? It's also known as a hero sandwich in some areas.

And if I recall aright, what most of the country calls a milkshake, in New England they call a frappe. (In NYC the call it an egg cream, which is really weird since it contains neither)

And soda or pop (carbonated soft drinks generally), they call tonic; though that one may be falling out of use.

Ok...well now you've piqued my curiosity.  I know a bubbler as a water
fountain, but I've never heard an alternate meaning of a grinder (besides
the salt or pepper...or grain...type) or cabinet (again, assuming we don't
mean what's behind all the small doors in the kitchen).  Are these Yankee
terms I'm not familiar with?  And what the heck *do* you call a milk shake
in New England???
