The original boundary between the crown colonies of Maryland and
Pennsylvania was a known, it was set at a specific latitude.
What was not known was where the western boundary of Pennsylvania was. It
was either a specific longitude or a specific river (don't ask me which, I
no longer remember!), whichever came first. So, Mason and Dixon, two
surveyors, walked along the southern border of Pennsylvania until they found
out where the western border of PA was.
So, although popular belief claims the Mason-Dixon line is the border
between MD and PA, technically speaking, the Western Border of PA is what
they were hired to determine.
