If you're thinking the Red Cross, generally the RC accepts only $ 
from individuals (not stuff). This accomplishes a number of things:
-they're not having to transport things (which costs time and $)
-it gives them a lot more flexibilty to respond
-it puts money back into the local economy, as the money goes to 
people, who them buy things from local businesses.
-other reasons I don't recollect

I actually think it makes a lot of sense. For those who haven't ever 
thought about it and have some time available, I really enjoyed my 
experience deployed with the RC for Katrina - it's a great chance to volunteer.
