From reports on other lists, a lot of SCA people
will just wear their "garb" to any Hallowe'en
party. As is typical of the period (600 to 1600), clothing is modest.
However, it might be just as well to wear hosen that don't have an overstuffed
codpiece. (In other words, I'll take my cup out of my fencing pants.)

Take Care With Costumes

Wrestling Entertainment get-up when you get ready for work on Friday.

Employment lawyer Elizabeth Lalik with Littler
Mendelson recommends that employers send written
guidelines and expectations about costumes and
reference the organization's anti-harassment
policies. Political figures are okay, but
costumes that mock or play on racial or ethnic
stereotypes are not. Steer clear of anything that
could offend a "reasonable co-worker," Lalik says.

"Someone in the organization must be tasked to
keep an eye out for what people wear and how
they're behaving," she said. If folks show up in
scanty or otherwise inappropriate costumes, have them change or send them
home.

That Halloween is on a Friday "is just going to
add to the brew," Lalik said -- especially if
office parties allow alcohol. "These things get out of hand," she said.

Her advice to bosses: Don't have the party. But
she knows that won't work for many workplaces.

"It's all about morale and motivating people. You
do that at a certain risk," she said.
