As the leaves fall from the trees, signaling the approaching end of the year, it's not too late for one last glorious road trip -- to glittering, cosmopolitan Constantinople, at "Treaties Not Turks: The First Crusade," in Bright Hills, October 24-26.
Come for the competition and comraderie as heavy fighters can test their mettle in a tournament to choose the new Bright Hills champion, those wielding rapiers clash in the time-honored Melee for Chocolate, archers range over hill and dale in a shoot laid out by last year's champion, Lord Fearghus, and the equestrians dazzle us with their horsemanship.
Come for the contests and classes. Baroness Martelle von Charlottenburg is looking to reward artisans presenting depictions of mother and child, in any medium, crusader items, and fibulae; to sample the nonalcoholic wares of the brewers; and toast the tales and songs of the bards. Teachers will share their knowledge of wire weaving, origami, beading and wool felting.
Come for the food! The Bright Hills Cooks Guild, under the able leadership of Lady Wynne, will offer nourishing lunch and a feast of Byzantine cuisine. For a few dollars more, you can be fed all weekend, from traveler's fare on Friday eve, to fund-raising breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday morning.
Come for the fun! The Sekunjabin Tavern will be open all day, serving various flavors, with space for bards and musicians to gather 'round the fire to make music and mischief. Or challenge your friends in the new board game to see who will control "Constantinople." For the children, there will be classes, a quest, and the traditional children's feast and Halloween party, including trick-or-treating the feast hall and a pinata.
