I had to add this.  My favorite garb incident happened several years ago on the way back from an event.  My friends and I had stopped by a Silver Diner for dinner.  There were about 4 of us and we were all pretty much dressed in the same period (Trunkhose, shirt, doublets).  As we were approaching the restaurant there came up the walk from the opposite direction four people all dressed in 1920's clothing (quite impressive).  When each group met where the sidewalk converged, we both stopped and almost in unision said to each other "HEY, cool clothes...are you in a play?"  It turns out that the other group were re-enactors and they even arrived in the appropriate vintage car.  They also apparently got the "are you in a play," line quite a bit too.  The look on the hostess' face when we all came in was priceless.
