You don't need an accent (unless you want one). All it takes is to concentrate on what you are saying. Avoid contractions, avoid obviously mundane slang and topics. Be really polite and use titles, if you know them. If you just do these things, it will appear that you are speaking "forsoothly." If you can avoid speaking without thought, you will have won 9/10ths of the battle.

Seems like an easy enough thing to do, but for the life of me, it's not that easy when you've fallen out of practice.

Also, about the Enchanted Ground at Pennsic. I've walked by there and been so tempted to ask if I could come inside. But I've always been too intimidated. Inside the border of the Enchanted Ground, it's supposed to be all period all the time. I'd love to visit. :-) Dunno if I could camp there for two weeks, but I think visiting would be awesome.

I just thought of this, too: if we are to avoid persona play to avoid putting people off, why do we bother with garb? I mean, we could just show up and exchange book reports. Be less hot in the summer. (insert look of irony here, please, so let's not debate that as if I am serious.)
Look. We have alternate names. We have given alternate place names to the entire planet. We have kings and queens and a hierarchy of nobility. We are geeks wearing funny clothes in horrific summer heat. We whack on each other with clubs to pick the next big kahuna, who we then bow down to and revere as royalty. If you are gonna tell me that none of that puts off your newcomers, but the idea of persona play does, I'm gonna tell you that maybe your newcomers are not being entirely honest with you. :-D

Put it anothe way: if someone doesn't get what we do, then the SCA is not for them. If they do, it is. Let's not lose track of what we are doing just so people who won't ever "get" us approve of us.
