Don't sweat it. This isn't about "OMG I have to do a PhD thesis on one
persona, and BE that persona all the time". It's more stuff like not using
people's mundane names in garb, or keeping geekspeak or WoW off to the
side. I have to deal with a lot of that, because I've got a "normal" SCA
name and a "weird" mundane name. I've got a fairly good idea of what
that-which-became-Germany-later was like in the 1500s, and I speak a
smattering of the language. That's pretty much about it for persona
development on my part.
"Hindering others' fun" doesn't come from "love them all". It comes from
loud cellphone conversations by the list field. It comes from not using SCA
names instead of mundane. It comes from uncovered Coke cans on the table (If
you've gotta drink from the can, here's a hint: Coke cans will fit inside
most tankards).
When I introduce myself, I'll tell someone that I'm Erich when I'm in garb.
I'll introduce myself as Dex when in a mundane setting. If I'm talking to
someone who's not familiar with the SCA, I'll take a moment to explain the
distinction.
The break between the forsoothly-speaking hippies and the mundane-name using
types came for me when I moved back from Ansteorra to Atlantia in '80 and
then got back into the SCA here in '81. That was where I started hearing
people using each other's mundane names while in garb.
Meanwhile, hope to see you, WITH mid-eastern garb (preferably cabaret :-D)
at Pennsic.
