Then there's the reaction of the folk up around the University of Maryland,
College Park. This is in the north-central part of Storvik. U-MD is the
birthplace of our like-minded cousins, the Markland Medieval Mercenary
Militia.

After a Markland reenactment of the Battle of Hastings, I needed some
potables for the feast. Went across Route 1 from the campus, to Town Hall
Liquors. I was wearing a mail byrnie and spangenhelm, over tunic and trews.
Had an axe stuck through my belt, and a sword scabbarded on the other side.
I clanked a bit, as I came in the door. The guy behind the counter looked
up from his newspaper, took in my appearance, and pointed at a cooler toward
the back of the store.

"Mead's in there", he said, and went back to his paper.

I grabbed a couple bottles, and went up to pay. He set down his paper. I had
to ask,

"How'd you know I'd want mead?".

"It's what you people drink all the time."

Another quick one: I was going to an event, and stopped for drinkies at a
Giant in Manassas (aka downtown Stierbach). Note that Outer Northern
Virginia is pretty thick with Civil War reenactors. In fact, I'd also been
in that Giant many times over the years in a Confederate uniform.

This time, I was wearing Landsknecht. As I headed for the checkout stand, a
couple of guys were discussing me.

"What the hell kind of outfit is that??"

"Dunno. Probably some kind of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zouave
">Zouave</a>."
