Ok, I have to tell this story. Toby of Isenfir loves this story. It's
one of the first ones I told him before he got involved in the SCA.....

I started out in the SCA in Calontir. (Yes, the purple turtle
people!) In a little place called Ames, Iowa (Or, in the SCA, the
Canton of Axed Root.). We and our barony were invited one year to
help lend support and color to the first Northern Iowa ren fair. It
was supposed to be highly publicized, lots of folks, etc. What it
actually ended up being was a very small group with few vendors and
few shows. But we had fun. To thanks us for being there, the folks
who put it together ordered us a bunch of pizzas. But, we had
nothing to drink. So my friend Malek, myself and Erlendr (the guy I
was dating at the time) decide to make the obligatory run to the
grocery store for beer and soda.

Erlendr is wearing what he called his "stealth garb" which consisted
of black pants, black engineers boots, a dark blue tunic with black
trim. Malek is wearing Arab pants, something close to an Abba a head
scarf (don't know the name) boots and a black cloak. I am wearing a
cotehardie, cut a little lower than standard, some cloth shoes, a
leather belt and pouch.

So, in the store we go. Sweeping behind Malek is his cloak. Right
out of the movies kind of thing. Erlendr walks kind of at a lope with
long strides and his boots make a big clunky noise. I'm shorter than
either and trying to keep up. I don't think anything of being in
garb... I've been in enough musical productions and stage plays that
costumes in public just don't phase me much. In this particular
grocery store, the liquor and beer (because you can buy both in the
grocery stores in Iowa) are around the corner where the cards,
magazines and wrapping paper is kept. (I don't know why, I still
wonder to this day.) We are selecting a type of wine. I don't like
white wines and Erlendr doesn't like dry red ones, so we are
discussing it, Malek is searching for soda and half decent beer.
(Read: NOT budweiser or that ilk.) Around the corner comes Malek,
giggling. He is closely followed by a small boy of about 5-7 years
of age. Said little boy peers around the aisle, his mouth forms a
huge OH! as he gasps, and runs off giggling. Malek and I shake our
heads smiling. About 3 minutes later as we begin to emerge from the
wine aisle, the same little boy, with dad in tow comes around the
corner, looks at the three of us and at the top of his high pitched,
excited voice yells; "LOOK DADDY...... WIERDOS!!!!!!!" To which
the three of us almost fall on the floor laughing. Dad is, of course,
horrified, grabs the child out of the way and all but plasters them
both to the wall to get out of our way as we giggle with mirth on our
way to the check out.

Along the way, apparently the rest of the little store heard it all
and we were observed by every child and parent in the store, and
children are literally pulled OUT of the aisles with parent's hands
over their mouths as we travel on our merry way out to the parking lot.

To top it off... the little girl at the check out counter asked if we
were in a play. Now realise that this so called ren fest was less
than 3 miles from the store in question. One would think they would
have some idea what was going on... but... you just never know...

So, that's my silly garb story....
