I'll add in my own thoughts as well.
The longer that I've been in the SCA, the more I start to think that the
'Persona' concept starts to fall out of favor. Not only for the
reasons that Shea has indicated in her own remarks about people wanting
to explore a greater range of history.
But in general that it starts to end up feeling much more 'Role Playing
Game' than 'Medieval/Renn Research Society'.
In fact, I know that the SCA has lost many potential members because of
the Persona aspect. There have been people over the years who were
really interested in Medieval history, to whom I've described the SCA,
the A&S, the Fighting, etc ... and whom were getting really interested.
Until I would state: "Yes and we all pick a persona for the 'person
that we are' in the middle ages" ... at which point they immediately get
repulsed and I can't convince them to come back.
All that said. I very much like personally having a 'basic persona' of
a Century/Place/General-Concept ... just to guide my Garb/Heraldry/Name/etc.
But I don't go any really any more detail than that. And I understand
reasons why some people want much more detail, and why some could really
care less.
