At a recent Crown Tourney I was talking with Sir Andrew between bouts. When
the next bout was starting, he excused himself and raised up a handkerchief
covered object, pulled the fabric aside to expose the lens and proceeded to
capture the entire bout on video.
If I wasn't looking for it, I don't think I would have seen it again that
day. It was a wonderful way to mask the modern technology and was as simple
as an unobtrusive piece of fabric.
I am constantly surprised by the ingenuity of individuals who wish to create
an atmosphere in keeping with the time period that they have chosen to
recreate. And I thank them for their efforts.
Keeping that in mind, I agree with McKenna. I find modern electronics to be
incredibly jarring. But then again, I also find the plastic folding chairs
and tables that we have at the halls we rent jarring. It is just a matter
of finding ways to either replace the modern with the appropriate period
items, or to disguise the modern if we are unable or unwilling to completely
give it up.
Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth,

Well, I can't make it to KASF, so I don't really have a horse in this
race... but on general principles I find cameras, camcorders, and cell
phones to be horribly, obtrusively, unpleasantly, modern. I can imagine few
things that will spoil the medieval atmosphere we're supposedly trying so
hard to create than a buncha folks running around filming everything.
I'd applaud anyone who wants to make a demo vid NOT at an event and put it
up on one of the sites like youtube, but I'd encourage anyone at KASF, or
any other event, to leave the electronics at home, or at least out of the
public areas.
regards,
McKenna
