Greetings,

I have talked to several people over the years about my feelings regarding
the desire to be a Pelican or a Laurel.  I personally think that it's NOT a
bad thing to talk about it.  Frankly if you're an apprentice or a protoge
you're in effect saying "it's at least a dream".

When I started in the SCA almost 11 years ago I used to say "I want to be a
Laurel in 20 years".  Ask me today and I'll say "I want to be a Laurel in 20
years".

When I get to the point where I'm saying "I want to be a Laurel in a year"
or "I deserve to be a Laurel now", then I'll know it's time to take a step
back, because that's when the desire becomes an expectation and THAT is
what's unattractive.
