I believe that driven people aspire to be more than they currently are. I
think there's nothing wrong with WANTING to be a Laurel or Pelican (or
Knight) someday. I think the error is when you do what you do based on a
calculation that if you do x amount of y you will get the prize you seek. I
believe that one can get caught up in the pursuit of the goal and lose sight
of the journey.

I haven't ever really understood the idea that if you publicly state that's
what you're working towards, then other people tend to think you're less
worthy. If you want to be a Laurel, you should be able to say so and that's
a way that others who ARE Laurels can know that's what you aspire to and
help with.

I am an apprentice and a student and I do service. I'm not a protegee or a
squire. I aspire to be a Laural someday.. no time soon, but someday I
became an apprentice because of that aspiration. I do the service because I
can and it's what's needed, I do the A&S because I want to and it's what
makes me happy.

If you find your joy in whatever you do, then the achievements will either
come or they won't matter because you're doing what you love.
