These are good questions.

On the matter of aspiring to the peerage, I believe
everyone should have a goal to reach for. It is what
keeps us improving. Those few individuals who would
put their efforts into arts or service or chivalry
JUST to receive an award should be pitied. They have
not learned to look beyond themselves and have, by
themselves, limited the joy and benefits they could
otherwise attain.

As to trash, well, this behavior follows our modern
sensibilities. Studies have shown that the level of
rudeness in word and deed has been on the rise. And
there are many among us who can not "see" the mess.
Perhaps, if we (collective) just keep pointing it out
and keep setting a good example, others will get the
habit. We can but try!

Children and competitions. That very word may be part
of the problem. It takes a lot of courage for an adult
to compete, let alone a child. Even displaying their
works is hard for some (mine included). However, most
children will have no problem sharing their projects
with other kids. Maybe hosting something like a round
table amongst the children, with adult mentors, might
get them going? Perhaps we should ask the kids?

My 2 cents,
Livia of Ravenswode
