To echo and update what Sir Cian stated about Drachenwald-

I was in an area of Germany nicknamed Schwarz Loch: The Black Hole. Usually there was no one between Frankfurt and Nurnburg south to Augsburg. Every so often, there was a spike in SCAdiens a group would form then disappear in a couple years when everyone rotated out. It exploded while I was there (98-2000). Lots of carpools, eventing by public transit, and van rentals. Every event had either inexpensive on-site accomodations or nearby crashspace. Airfare was pretty inexpensive at the time and the ramp up for the EU made travel by air very easy. Often, someone with a large vehicle would pretty much have their travel paid for by others giving money to get their heavy or bulky gear driven while they flew or took a train.

Nordmark was very far away. It was and remains a Principality. You are more likely to see Swedes at Pennsic than you are at a given event on Continental Drachenwald.
The UK, Ireland and Iceland were very far away. In the last couple of years these areas have become the Crown Principality of Insulae Drachonis.

There was a great celebration when the Crowns of Drachenwald visited Ma Ale Giborim (Jerusalem, Israel) a couple years ago. Greece, Austria, Denmark, France and Spain all have formed groups in the last eight years, most less than five. The Stronghold of Alexander's Road rose and fell in Tuzla. The Barony in South Africa almost never sees royalty, I believe HG Elfin made efforts to get there at least once every other time he reigned. Poland has had many contacts over the last ten years, but no actual groups -- economically no one can afford basic SCA Membership.

Drachenwald has managed to make the turn from being GI's and dependents into being local nationals. Drachenwald has spread outside of the traditional US sphere of influence. They've layered the Kingdom as geography has expanded and population has become denser.

Now, why do I feel like I was just somebody's huckleberry?

PS- First person experience ended in 2000. All information since available through friends and drachenwald.sca.org
PPS- The Schwarz Loch area went from having about 100 very active members from three Shires (Schweinfurt, Wurzburg, Augsburg) to being mostly quiet again these days.
