This cultural diffrence and the distances is something that several of us discussed at an event recently..... I do agree, that the closer the groups are physically, the closer they tend to be personally and emotionally as well....
We have three groups in our barony, and if Ilse des Diamants or Misty Marsh holds an event, it's anywhere from 3 to four hours for a day trip, and that is just to support our own.... The fact that we are so far away physically makes it harder for folks to get to know one another, and that I can see as being issue throughout the southern part of the Kingdom....
**chuckles** My solution???? ((Mind you, I am all for this, and serious about it, but I also know it's not really realistic and feasible))
MORE RECRUITING AND MORE GROUPS!!!! **laughs** We have one group in the "exploratory" process I mentioned earlier in our Barony, and the possibility of a second group within the next few years, and they happen to be in "no man's lands" so to speak, being fairly centered between the groups that are already in existance....

Subject: [MR] New Principality
This problem with the idea of a Principality springs up every so often. I
can tell you, having been orginally recruited in Attlium and then moved to
the Storvik area in the early 80s and lived and played predominatly in the
North throughout the 80s yet travelled a lot into the south that there has
always been a cultural differance. Now after nearly 10 years in the south I
can still see it, except the middle and south are stronger politically than
they were in the 80s. In my opionion the North is more of a large homogenous
area than the middle and south, this because travel times are so much
closer. Also the mentaility of living in a large urban environment versus
smaller urban envirnments tends to create slightly diferant mindsets. These
things effect the way people think about how the SCA should be played, and I
think goes a long way toward building the differnces of opinion and feeling
of belonging within the Kingdom as a whole. The Kingdom really is somewhat
differant in the north than in the middle and south. The DC suburbs and
Maryland really are more or less one big megalopolis. This, I feel, leads to
the north wanting a sense of it's own identity, since they really are a
somewhat differant animal than the rest of the kingdom.
