I know *Why* a pelican - The heraldic Pelican is the symbol of self-sacrifice and piety. It is depicted as feeding its own younge from the blood from its pierced breast.

    Assorted conversations on the list about the beginning of the
peerages brought a question to my mind.
    If, as was mentioned by someone, that the Pelican Order was
originally conceived by the BOD - who decided it would be called the
Order of the Pelican and why a Pelican???
