If you're coming across I 70 from MD/DC/VA/WV, please note that there
is construction happening between Hancock and Breezewood. Alternate
routes are suggested - they're doing roadwork that involves closing
the left lane for about a mile in two different spots. Also, there is
now a Pilot gas station on Rt 422 where the park n ride used to be.
It has a McDonalds and a Subway, and the gas was $3.89 there yesterday
when we left. If you're going on Saturday or Sunday, the construction
shouldn't pose too much of a problem, but Friday evening is going to
be terrible - some of the land grab folks said their usual 4 1/2 hour
drive took 9 hours, and I believe them. I've seen what 70 west bound
traffic looks like up here on a Friday in normal circumstances. It's
not pretty.
So if you can go around - please do. You can get on the turnpike
earlier, you can skip 70 after Hancock and take 68 west to 79 and go
straight up (takes about an hour longer than the turnpike and the
mountains are more noticeable), you can just go to Cumberland and take
?220? (I think that's the road?) up to the turnpike.
Have a safe trip!
