War of the Wings III
Part the Second
Your Majesties:
Know, as you travel to the Great Pennsic War, that we have succeeded in putting a name to the Enemy of the Holy Rock in Year Three of the War of the Wings, and beg your indulgence, that their faces may be known to us all. A small amount of history is therefore in order.
Excerpt from The Book of Stone, p.311
[translated into English for the unlettered. –ed]
And lo, it came to pass in the First Year of the War of the Wings, the Folk of the Holy Rock battled through the Fire and Smoke of War with the Masters of the Wind. And the Second Year of the War of the Wings did see the common folk of the Sanctified Boulder victorious over the forces of Diamont Noir, albeit after many narrow escapes.
In the Third Year of the War of the Wings, however, when the common folk had been driven to exhaustion and their enemies hemmed them all round, it is written that Alianor of the Swan did rise up out of the East, and lead them against their enemies. And this year the enemy was Legion, and some folk called it the French Civil War, for the enemy was beautiful and terrible to behold. And their description is thus:
Long ago in France, the royal line did split asunder over time, as families became enemies and battled to the last. One such cadet branch of the royal line was famous for two products; one product being its wine, and to this day they label their product under the name of the family, known as the Beauzeaux.
Thus ends the recitation from The Book of Stone. Two bottles of this wine are carried by Alianor of the Swan as proof to Your Majesties.
Their other product, naturally enough, consisted of jesters; otherwise known as fools, mountebanks, buffoons, clowns, comedians, comics, harlequins, humorists, japers, jokesters, merry-andrews, mimes, pranksters, tricksters, wags, and other zany people. [For those curious as to why that particular product would be “natural”, simply sound out the family name to yourself. (hint: “beau” is pronounced “bo”.) –ed.]
This information came to us by a rather circuitous route, Your Majesties; the end of the trail of evidence lies with a roving band of gypsies, known as the Traders Jeaux. It is therefore obvious to all and sundry that such a chain of evidence is incontestable.
We end this missive with a final recitation from The Book of Stone, pp. 315-316:
And it came to pass that Alianor of the Swan did lead the forces of Sacred Stone in several skirmishes with the Beauzeaux, and in the main was victorious. That noble lady did take particular delight in ambushing supply caravans of the Beauzeaux, all laden with their expensive red wine; and so much of that wine was spilled that the common folk began to call her Alianor of the Red Swanne.
But the call continued throughout the lands for warriors, and artisans, and all manner of help for Sacred Stone and Alianor of the Red Swanne; for they were still sore beset on all sides; and the call that went out was a resounding “DEATH TO THE BEAUZEAUX!!”
There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.-Niccolo M.
