To Lady Rhiannon's excellent advice, I would add that if it is NOT 
"sunforger",
or otherwise treated to be fire-retardant, I'd suggest that you 
should treat it
before patching.  Disolve some borax in water (all it will hold), 
soak the fabric,
let it dry, and then patch.
