[MR] Advice Please - Patching Canvas Pavilion

Greetings to the barony and to the tavern from Gisela whose pavilion porch roof and pavilion porch post had a disagreement at Gulf Wars . . . resulting in a rend about 18 inches in length near the peak of the roof.

I've purchased a yard of white cotton duck and a spool of white cotton hand sewing thread with which to patch the thing.

Ought I to launder the duck first?

Is there anything else I should know before I put needle to canvas?
