Have you been to Pennsic before?  Seen all the folks that don't participate
in the SCA but do come to Pennsic?  There's numerous cases of marshalate
issues that never get resolved because some schmoe from Bubba's Fantasy
Pirate Elves came to an event, picked up or borrowed enough gear to get
through an authorization and then jacked someone.  But nothing gets done
because they then drop off the face of the planet (as far as the SCA is
concerned) only to resurface much later with no track record.

As you said, there's no reason to wait until the last minute.  If you play
in the SCA at all, you can make time to get your gear together and
authorize.  If something changes and you don't manage to get that
authorization hopefully you've still got your lunch money and can get on
with your life.

And if you think spear is brain dead then you haven't seen the right folks
work a shield wall.
