[MR] New comers being nekkid

And if you'll look again you'll see that it is still
one of two requirements of the SCA. The other being to
pay your non-member fee/site fee when attending
events.
I can understand at large formal events pressing the
issue. But if it is a smaller event I really do not
see the point in turning someone away.
No, we are not here for entertainment. We are here for
education. I'm sure some have forgotten how odd we
felt on our first day, but try to remember. Lets face
it. Were nerds people. Hate to break it to you. The
normal person does not check out at 5 on Friday then
spend all weekend showing off large bruises, spinning
wool, or debating the very delicate points of combat
archery. WERE WEIRD! And they (they being the new
comers) know this.
But, they come to us with interest. They come to us
wanting us to guide them and show them our ways. It
takes a lot for someone to attempt to come into our
world. And when they do, they should be welcomed with
open arms.
For a moment, just a moment think about the one person
in the SCA you look up to most. Try to remember the
first person who caught your attention or the person
you learned the most from. Think about the one person
out there in SCAdia who "makes" the event for you, the
person who events just arent the same without. You
could be that person for someone.
Each one of us makes an impression on someone at every
event, large or small. Whether we want to or not. It
is up to each one of us to choose whether that
impression will be a good one or a bad one. It is up
to us to choose if we will pass on the knowledge of
those who have come before us. It is up to us to
choose if we wish to keep the dream alive.
Each new person is the future of this dream we call
ours. One day all of us will be too old to walk out
onto the battle field or simply attend an event. Who
will keep our dream alive?
So what if they are uncomfortable when they first show
up at the event? Find a Chatelaine, anyone who is
willing to walk them through the site. Someone who is
willing to find out what they are interested in.
Someone to take them to someone with similar interests
and peak their interests even more. Then, that someone
can walk them back to the loaner garb and politely
ask, "Are you ready to get dressed now? Because you
really do look rather funny nekkid."
For the sake of everything holy, please dont turn them
away. That could be the new best friend I never knew I
had, or yours for that matter.
