Lady Yenega, here is some information for your weird facts that may win
you Jeopardy some day. :-)
If I recall correctly there are several plates in the Paulus Kal Fechtbuch
(fight book) of 1479 showing malle "boxer briefs". I have a color copy at
home that I can look at. In the mean time if folks are interested in
looking the manuscript is available online in b/w at
http://mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/bsb00001840/images/index.html.
It would be quite useful. As is illustrated in the Kal manuscript the men
in harness are on horseback. A fitted or at least shaped malle "boxer
brief" or cod piece would provide several benefits. It would be more
comfortable to wear, provide the same or similar protection as a malle
skirt and allow the rider to control the horse easier. On foot it might
be used in conjunction with a malle skirt or longer malle shirt or perhaps
on its own.
I am not aware of any survivals of any fitted or shaped malle groin
protection. But if anyone here is aware of some please let me know.
Pax,
Edward de Clare
