One of the ideas was "Shirriff of Mayberry" with Shirriff Barney with a crossbow with one bolt in his pouch. So I got to thinking this morning (driving with nothing else to do) and the song "We didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel came on. And the poetry side of my brain got to work. The sad thing is that it was pretty funny to start but there's apparently only so much you can parody about war before you start to take it seriously. So, with no apologies to anybody at all, We Did Naught Start the Fyre Bone club, stone club, wooden club, metal club, bigger clubs, better clubs, look at this mace Bone knife, stone knife, wooden knife, not so much, metal knife, better knife, swords around the place Riding saddle, stirrups, chain mail, horse lance, bigger shields better shields, heavy cavalry Run `em over, run `em through, run `em down until you're blue, kill them all, worry later, God will know his own, right? We did naught start the fyre It was always burning since the world's been turning- We did naught start the fyre (Wait, what vile lie is that? As all know the world's flat.) Roman fort, hill fort, palisade, catapult, trebuchet, castle siege, barbarians at the gate Norman, Saxon, Viking raid, Scots, Irish, Moors in Spain, chain mail's not enough, make some heavy plate French can't really win at all unless someone else makes the call, Lionheart, Saladin, Germans, Picts, Gauls Stones throw at a castle wall, take their stuff and kill `em all, burn, rape, pillage, in the right order! We did naught start the fyre It was always burning since the world's been turning We did naught start the fyre It was stormy one day, then a tree was burning Joan of Arc kicked English ass, then they burned her at the stake, now you know why French can't win, killing winners, big mistake Nasty Muslims and those Jews, they don't worship like we do, God Wills It and so do you, take their stuff and kill `em too Charles Martel, Charlemagne, Turenne, Chuck du Gaulle, Jean Lannes, Phil Augustus, Military French guys all, Chalons, Sack of Rome, Salsu, Badr, Bosra, Yarmouk, Iron Bridge, Siege Constantinople, Rome gets Sacked again, Stamford Bridge, Hastings, Siege of Jerusalem, Agincourt and Crecy We did naught start the fyre It wert always burning since the world wast turning We did naught start the fyre No we did not light it but we did not fight it Knights Templar, Church of Rome, British Navy, Thunderdome (just checking to see if you were actually listening) First Crusades, Second too, Northern Crusades, quite a few Third and Fourth and Fifth and Sixth, Seventh Eighth Ninth took their licks, Put on your Cross, grab your sword, kill them for the Christ our Lord We did naught start the fyre It wert always burning since the world wast turning We did naught start the fyre But we'll conquer their lands with our bloody sword hands Arabs had their dumb wars too, so don't think we pick on you China, Russia, and Iran, they've all screwed Afghanistan And so they don't feel left out, Japan's had some wars, no doubt But you don't hear `bout these much, Western World's what we all touch You don't hear about the bad, just the parts that make us glad That we're reading history, written by the winners!
