[MR] Garb question

Have garb question. Clearly, I have a fondness for shirts and skirts, with something over the whole thing like a doublet or something. Not much into dresses, not much into fussiness. Mix and match skirt ensemble is what I'm looking for. Which is good, because I am not a good seamstress.

I have to replace my favorite doublet, it's falling apart. And it's not really all that comfortable for long periods, either, it tends to bite into my kidneys after a while. I mean, I like it, but maybe its' time for something different.

It's the seam at the waist thata gets me. I'm kind of short waisted anyway, and I dont' like the way my skirts hitch up right under the peplum. Are there any period doublet or jerkin styles that do not have a seam that hits right at the waist? I'd love a smooth, long line that ended below the waist that I could maybe even belt or something. I tried my husband's jerkin on once and liked the line of it. If I could get rid of some of that fuss at the waist, I'd be a lot more comfortable, I think.

I have a Tandy's right next door to my job, a simple leather jerkin might be fun to make. All that leather is calling to me.

Suggestions?
