yes, GT students have advances minds, but that is only academically.  their emotional and maturity levels are still that of 2-4th graders.  in my opinion, as a teacher and recent teaching student, these books would be to advanced maturity wise.  i know for a fact that mists of avalon would be due to the graphic nature of about 1/4 of the book.

i dont know of any books off of the top of my head, but this site from the herald's page is awesome.  http://www.yourchildlearns.com/heraldrygame/index.html  i think they kids would love the game aspect of it, and it has a very basic explination on heraldry.

perhaps GT has changed,
but we started with "idylls for the king"
"the iliad" and "the odyssey"
homer, ovid, and british lit, get it across that
people are the same from then till now.

if you want to get them hooked before
putting in the heavies, can always go
easy on them with "Mists of Avalon"
"3 muskateers".  "cyrano" was in that line but
not endorsed. :-)

remember the GT kids are bored
and just as smart as adults, and the
average reading level is college level, even
at their ages - if they read. so thats the
elementary challenge to convert the sharp
minds to reading.

Passion, it lies in all of us. Sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden it will stir. Open it's jaws and howl. It speaks to us, guides us. Passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. the joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we'd truly be dead.
