Greetings Lady Glynis and fellow readers,
I would say I'm of 2 minds on this topic.
ONE - I have no problem with the contest - kind of a cute idea to
promote reading the whole paper rather than just skimming the
interesting parts. I've seen this done in other publications and
puzzle books and it can be entertaining.
TWO - An early issue claimed 144 errors. That's an acceptable number
for a paper the size of the PI, but 1066 intentioonal errors? That's
a bit excessive. The problem I have with it is that more and more
publications these days have more and more errors that AREN'T
intentional and I find that level of poor grammar, spelling and
punctuation a sad commentary on both the quality of these periodicals
and papers and an even sadder commentary on the quality of our current
educational standards.
I think I'd rather see a contest that inserted 'clues' or 'code
words' to solve a puzzle than just finding X number of errors. Even
with Spell Check these days I find errors by writers who don't always
have a good grasp of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
