No argument here, of course, you are right. However one might say the reason you gents were so successful with good, old fashioned manners is because they aren't so common. You stood out.
I was on another SCA list where someone mentioned how wonderful it was that some gentlemen helped a lady with a burden and opened the door for her. That's awesome and everything, but the fact that such gallantry actually was marveled at and commented on was a sad commentary. Think about it...an SCA lady was pleasantly suprised that some SCA men acted like...well...SCA men.
Young man came into a place I was working once and doffed his hat to me. Doffed. His. Hat. All yes, ma'am, and thank you ma'am, and please, thank you. Wow. I had an instant crush on him. :-DDDD
It's sad when such behavior is considered remarkable.
