However, it is also should be noted that some women --- and I am one of them

--- STRONGLY object to "forced escort", since it feels like it denigrates

the competence of the lady in question.

Greetings to the list!

I just would like to point out that the idea of escorts probably goes back to our more "romantic" roots
rather than a period practices. Given that, for the most part, it is still a heavily male presence on
the heavy fighting field, I believe the idea is that the gentleman is there to help the lady as “protection”
from real foes or figurative (evil spirits, bad thoughts, ect). It is nothing against the lady herself
other than the simple fact that most ladies in the SCA simply do not fight and therefore do not have the
training to fight off foes on their own. (Yes, I am well aware there are exceptions to this rule. I am
making gross generalizations in order to show that there might be some thought behind this practice.)
Think of the escort as a bodyguard and not as “some man who thinks I’m some poor weak female”. Honestly,
given the idea of protection, anyone, regardless of sex, could provide escort. Safety in numbers is not
a new idea. -Lady Isabella Mea Caterina D’Angelo

> There will be an open armour workshop on 3 May 2007 located in Fayetteville, NC, hosted by Uilleag o'Conmhaic. The emphasis will be on leather armour, however metal pounding can be included. There will be plenty of tools available for both armor disciplines, but materials will be in short supply. Please let me know if you will need materials for your project ahead of time and I can arrange to pick some up, and then you will just have to reimburse for the materials used. If you have a project you are already working on and want/need advise, or just need a tool you might not have, you will be more than welcome.
