Atlantians,
Many thanks for the generosity of thought that has been expressed in these
emails. I would request, however, that if you really wish to contribute to
the supplies for waterbearing or the chirurgeonate, please do so in the
course of planning for an event. The supplies we use/provide may be
somewhat more obvious than many other items needed for an event, but we are
volunteers just as any other event staff member. Tip jars or monetary
'contributions to the cause' would address one issue (helping underwrite
waterbearing and chirurgeonate supply costs), but they have great potential
for misuse and abuse. Who takes custody of the funds? Do the funds go to
the local chirurgeon, to the event's Chirurgeon in Charge (CIC) who may not
be local, or to the hosting group? How are expenditures of these funds
handled and accounted for?
Some Atlantian groups are marvelous about not just providing funding, but
actually having the supplies ready and waiting. Other groups make the
funding available IF the CIC or Waterbearer in Charge requests reimbursement
(if the CIC or WIC even knows the funds are there). Still others tacitly
expect the CIC/WIC to supply everything. Several individuals have avoided
the financial landmines by giving me a gift box of Gatorade cans, pickle
bottles and the like. This is one possible option. But for the benefit and
heartburn-avoidance of all concerned, the best option is to provide the
funds as part of an event's budget. As Rozsa indicated, the amount needed
depends on the size and type of event. If you wish more explicit figures,
contact me at chirurgeon at atlantia.sca.org and I'll do my best to help.
Yours in service to the continued good health of The Dream,
Morwenna Trevethan
Kingdom Chirurgeon

I have always budgeted in waterbearing supplies into my event budgets and
have never had any issues covering the costs or had anyone question it. It
really is not that much, most of the left over supplies can be stored for
the next event, and it is something genuinely appreciated by the populace at
events - whether fighters or non-fighters. I've certainly grabbed a pickle
or two from the waterbearers!
If you are uncertain how much to budget - talk to Baroness Morwenna - she
has been doing this for years and can give you a very reasonable estimate
for the amount of money that should be budgeted for the size event you are
having.
