Perhaps for actual fighting it could be in the form of a small helm mantle type thing.  Not the long stately ones worm by many knights, but the little square ones that often bear the wearer's baronial badge.  White (perhaps with a blue border and a single blue Spike) would be nice and reflective in the sun and would be much more visible in the fray.

P.S. Personally, I don't like the idea of the mantles. I will bear Spike on my shield, but I agree with others that camails will cover them up, or they will be another layer to discomfort the fighters.
