An update on the Marinus tornadoes of Monday, April 28, 2008

A check of the Marinus mail list this morning indicates that most of us were
unaffected.

Good Morning America seems to be doing a good job of describing what
happened, but some Atlantians might want a bit more detail.

For the record, my family lives near Craney Island. We had either a mini
tornado or wind shear at 4:40 PM. This was approximately the same time the
water spout was in the James River making trouble for Norfolk Naval Base.
Most of the devastating tornadoes happened more than a 15 minute drive
West/South from Craney Island.

For those of you that might have visited Bedford House when they lived in
Suffolk, the community of Driver is about 5 minutes away. This was one of
the touch-down points. At least one building (more than 100 years old)
collapsed.

Obici Hospital had severe damage. It looked like the drive up cover was
ripped off the front of the building. They had a lot of damage to vehicles
in the parking lot, but the hospital remained open and saw lots of "walking
wounded". (Obici is about 30 minutes from the old Bedford House.)

High Point (the only area that I'm not familiar with) had several houses
destroyed. This may have been the site of the strip mall that was ripped
apart.

The city manager and police chief held a press conference this morning at
6:30 AM.  The chief felt positive that they had found everyone last night;
but, to be sure, later today the rescue dogs will be checking all the
damaged buildings.

Greetings,

Does anyone in the tavern know if any SCAdians were
effected by today's tornados in Suffolk, VA?
