For those who haven't heard, the combat archery incident that occurred at
this past Kingdom Crusades is resolved.
BOTTOM LINE: All safety systems worked as they were supposed to, and no one
was hurt.
DISCUSSION: The bolt in question managed to approach an East Kingdom
fighter backwards and slanting from overhead and downward. The bolt entered
the grill of the helmet "nock end" (if there had been a nock) first, and at
such an angle that the upper end of the anti-penetration device (APD) was
able to fit under bottom of the next bar higher.
How did this happen? We don't know for sure, of course, how the bolt was
able to approach the fighter backwards and downwards. The assumption is
that there were at least two rebounds. It was a hot day and the APD
deformed under impact. Both the bolt (and its component pieces) and the
grill had been inspected and met specs.
RESOLUTION: No further action is needed. The incident has been
investigated at the Kingdom and SCA level. The APD design worked as it was
supposed to.
