Dearest friends – greetings from Aachen,

I cannot believe how far I am from home. I thought Chichester was a long ways – well, no longer! The sights I have seen I can hardly describe and my journey is not even half over!

While the trip was long – it was not nearly as bad as I feared. Truly companions ease the rigors of travel. We were also blessed to have our protectors, I do believe if we had traveled without, things may have been quite different. But never fear, dear friends, I have already entered into contract with swordsmen for my journey to Rocamadour and while their swords may not appear as impressive, I have observed them to be just as effective. But enough of that – on to my sights of Aachen and truly impressive sights they have been.

As one might imagine of a building created under a vision from the Emperor Charlemagne, it was awe-inspiring. I fear to say my jaw did hang agape as I stood within the nave. I felt so small. Even the doors are astounding – bronze adorned with the heads of lions. Towering windows, amazing. And the relics gathered here, this site is truly blessed, from the swaddling clothes of our Saviour to the bones of Charlemagne himself. The wonders go on and on. My only disappointment is knowing I am unlikely to return to see the completion of the wondrous towers being attached to the cathedral. Perhaps one day, my children’s children shall see it completed in all its glory.

Dear friends I must be on my way – I shall write again soon from France and do not forget our plans to meet on the 17th of November in the Canton of Cyddlain Downs.

Julian Hungerford
