The Pilgrimage – November 17th – Canton of Cyddlain Downs

Warmest greetings unto my dearest friends residing at the tavern of the Merry Rose,

I have finally embarked about the greatest journey of my life – a pilgrimage that shall take me to lands I have only dreamed about. I began my journey close to home, in Chichester at the tomb of St. Richard of Wych. Oh, dear friends, the site of the cathedral spire rising above the countryside, reaching to the heavens was awe-inspiring. Truly St. Richard showers his blessings upon this community as I have heard of a great many miracles from those who have prayed at his tomb and have seen evidence from offerings left behind.

The cathedral itself was quite a bustling place. I found myself in glad company with more fellow pilgrims than I could ever count. To accommodate so many of the faithful, the cathedral has created three separate stations for prayer to the saint. Feeling the need for extra intercessions on the long journey I have only just begun, I gave offerings and prayers at each of the three chapels and feel well fortified as I set off to continue my journey. Before I left the cathedral, I obtained a token to remember my journey to Chichester and will look fondly on my pilgrim’s badge as my travels take me to strange new lands.

I have taken up with a group of fellow pilgrims also heading toward Aachen – my next destination. We have hired on a few guardsman as protection on our journeys as many rumors can be heard of the dangers that befall travelers caught unawares. So please don’t worry about me on my travels, dear friends – I feel quite safe among new-found companions, our staunch protectors, and, of course, travel under the blessings of the saints on our journeys.

Dear friends, while I must end this missive so that I may continue my journey, I do entreat you to join me at my travels end in Cyddlain Downs so that I may share with you all the wonders I have seen and will see. I shall arrive on the 17th of November and do hope that in some small way we may recreate the experiences I know shall happen on this great adventure!!

In anticipation of our meeting and with regret that it is not sooner, yours in service,
Julian Hungerford

By the by – a fellow pilgrim just informed me that St. Richard of Wych was known as the Laughing Bishop – what a wondrous, good omen as I start this long journey – let it be filled with joy and laughter.
