Long ago, when dirt was young, I remember how precious my school break
vacations were. I got to leave my beeper, not study, and pretend that I was in
another world. I went to the war.
I had certain responsibilities to cover while at Pennsic and could not be
out of touch for a full two weeks. The first call from the my mother to let
her know I was there safe and I called at least once a week after that. I
really should have checked in more but the lines for the pay phone were long and
there were so many fun distractions. I checked in with work three times
over the two weeks. What a change in the world now.
One year, when I called home on the trip back from Pennsic, I couldn't get
my Mom at any of the pay phones I hit. The next day I got my Mom on the
phone and I scolded her for not letting me know before hand where she was (all
day and night) while I drove home.
My Mom fussed me right back asking, "How do you miss the entire North
Carolina Coast Evacuating for a hurricane."
I had thought there was a lot of rain when we got to Southern Virginia, but
I never tuned into the news.
I defended myself with the telling her it never came up in the weather
reports at the WAR.
"Don't you read the paper", my mother said.
I indignantly replied, "Of course I do! I got the Pennsic Daily Tiddings
every day."
>From then on I always got the paper on the trip back from the war.
In the Dream,
Lady Lora Leigh
