[MR] Veterans' Appreciation

Besides the free meal, the Golden Corral is one of two huge supporters of
the DAV. All money from fund raisers by the DAV goes directly to helping
Veterans. Most of that money is in the National Transportation Network. They
work with Ford Motor Company to get disabled veterans to their doctor's
appointments.
Disabled vets get good health care coverage, often free, if they use VA
facilities. Before I moved to Winston-Salem, that meant 45 miles for primary
care and 80 or 110 miles for a specialist. I am able to drive. Many of our
disabled friends can not. With the exception of the national office, all DAV
workers and service officers work for free. Many of them put in 20-30 hours
a week doing so.
This is from the Golden Corral site:
Military Appreciation Monday
November 12, 2007
For the past 6 years, Golden Corral has been honoring the US Military with
a free "thank you" dinner and beverage at any Golden Corral restaurant on
Military Appreciation Monday (first Monday after Veteran's Day). This year,
Golden Corral has designated Monday, November 12, 2007, from 5 to 9 pm, to
honor any person who has ever served in the United States Military.
>From the first Military Appreciation Monday in 2001 to the present, Golden
Corral has donated 1.5 million free "thank you" meals and $1.9 million
dollars to the Disabled American Veterans.
Between November 1 and November 12, 2007, the Disabled American Veterans
Organization will accept contributions to be used in the local and state DAV
chapters.

The DAV was at my local Kroger down the street Friday, handing out their
poppies. I drove past them as I left, went straight home, the opposite
direction than I was intending to go, grabbed my spare money, came back and
got myself a poppy.
I make a point of getting at least one yearly, they are one of the few
organizations I willingly support. Because someday, I or someone I know, may
need their services.
