[MR] Poppies & Veteran's Day

No one in my immediate area distributes poppies any more, which
saddens me... my father and both grandfathers were veterans, and I am
chaplain to an ROTC group that has been active since before there
officially WAS such a thing as ROTC. Some of my cadets, now officers,
are on active duty today at the post of danger. The fresh-faced
youngsters I saw Friday at our observances will be there soon. I wish
I could find a poppy today; if anyone happens to obtain an extra,
please contact me off-list?

Instead, I offer LTC McCrae's famous poem, for all our veterans living and dead.

In Flanders Fields
LTC John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders field the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

God bless you all!

Meli
