Highland River Melees will have Arts & Sciences displays, classes, and
competitions!
The theme of this year's Highland River Melees is the Crusades with a time
period from 1066 to 1291.
Displays and Demos
We will have displays and demos of A&S fitting within this time period
including lampworking and a tent dedicated to Middle Eastern A&S. Anyone wishing
to display or demo A&S from this period is welcome. In addition we will also
have a general A&S area for anyone who wishes to display, demonstrate, or just
hang out and work on their A&S - weaving, lacemaking, etc. If you would
like us to set up a particular time for your non-fiber arts demo - both from the
period and general - and put it on the schedule please let me know -
_elenadis at aol.com_ (mailto:elenadis at aol.com) . For fiber arts please contact
Alessandra - _merritt at tatrc.org_ (mailto:merritt at tatrc.org) .
Classes
We are in the process of putting together the class schedule. There will be
classes in the Middle Eastern area. There will be a class on Pater Nostres -
history and hands on. We are seeking other teachers - if you have an interest
in this time period - anything other than fiber arts that happened during
the period not just Crusades related - please contact me - _elenadis at aol.com_
(mailto:elenadis at aol.com) . For fiber arts please contact Alessandra -
_merritt at tatrc.org. _ (mailto:merritt at tatrc.org. Updates) Updates to the class
schedule will be sent out.
A&S Competitions
In their travels, the Crusaders acquired items or learned new techniques
that they took back to Europe. Therefore the main theme of A&S competition will
center on these items and techniques that they adopted “as is” or
incorporated into already existing items and practices when they returned home.
The four subcategories will be:

A. Items made of hard materials such as wood, clay, glass, and metal
B. Items made of soft materials such as fiber and paper
C. Edible items
D. Bardic

Note: There will be some materials such as leather that could fall into
either the hard or soft category. It will be up to the entrant’s discretion as to
which category they wish to enter.

Documentation will be required showing the source and the subsequent use in
Europe. Please provide a one-page summary of the documentation.

Entries must be in by 1:00 pm. Judging will be 1:00 – 3:00.
If you are interesting in being a judge, please contact me -
_elenadis at aol.com_ (mailto:elenadis at aol.com) .
There will be a lampwork bead competition that will be announced separately.
