E-mail harvestering programs which are use by spammers grab whole e-mail 
addresses from any public location they are posted on the internet. Using AT 
instead of the ampersand symbol puts a spammer into position of manually 
correcting the address label, or having it tossed out of the pool of 
addresses. Thankfully, spammers tend to be lazy (read: rely entirely on 
automation), especially when there are so many that don't put any kind of 
simple security on their e-mail addresses.
