Greetings everyone from the Deputy Earl Marshal of the Horse of
Atlantia, Brandwyn Alston;

We are having cavalry activities at the Birthday of the Black Prince.

Here is the information:
Cavalry Info Packet
Birthday of the Black Prince
April 13-15, 2007 in the Barony of Black Diamond

Once again the Barony of Black Diamond is celebrating the birthday of
the Black Prince, Edward, Prince of Wales 1359 with a variety of
martial activities. Some of these activities will be mounted games
geared more towards riders of all levels that are not familiar with
the SCA mounted games. The games available will be The Quintain,
Jousting at Rings, Pig-sticking, Reed Chop, Saracen Heads and Spear
Toss. Challenge bouts and "a sheep round-up" (not with live sheep) are
planned in addition to the Black Prince's Cavalry Tourney.

In addition to (or in place of- if there are no live horses on the
site) there will be a stick pony tournament with categories for
different age groups. (Supply your own stick pony).

We are also planning a Knight's Tourney where the Knights are pulled
around the cavalry field on "barrel horses" by their squires
(providing we get the barrel horses constructed in time). It should be
a lot of fun and silliness - well maybe not so much for the poor
squires, but everyone else will likely enjoy it.

The site is the Bland County Fairgrounds, 1 Fairground Drive, Bland,
VA 24315. There is tent camping available at the site. Cavalry people
may sleep in the barn, but we recommend cots on tarps to get you up
off the dirt floor. Bring warm bedding and clothing, since this event
is normally quite chilly at night.

Please see the event flyer for information on reservations for the
event, which should be sent separately to the autocrat. Pets are ok,
but must be on a leash and the site is wet – no modern containers.
There is a fee for camping, whether you do it in the tent or in the
barn.

Please supply the information requested below to the Marshal of the
Horse if you plan to ride at this event.
Marshal of the Horse (MoTH): THLady Brandwyn Alston of the Rift
(Stella Brindle) 612 Jewell Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23701 (757)
488-3597 email: BrandwynAlston at gmail.com

SEND event registration and money separately to the Autocrat: Ravenna
Storm (Brett McPeak) 9118 East Bluegrass Trail, Bland, VA 24315 (276)
688-4894 email: ravennastorm at yahoo.com:

Event Fees: Adult Member $10.00 daytrip, $15.00 Camping (non-SCA
member add $3.00)
      Child (6-17) $8.00 daytrip, $9.00 Camping (non-SCA member add $3.00)
      Child (0-5) Free.

Due to a cavalry marshal scheduling conflict, there will not be
Authorizations at this event. Authorizations from other kingdoms are
allowed, but proof of authorization must be provided (rider
card/fighter card).

Horse Owners:
The site has two barns with box stalls for the horses. The stalls have
dirt floors. You must bring your own bedding. Shavings or straw are
ok. Please clean out the bedding upon your departure.

There is no stall fee.

One horse per stall only please. There are no paddocks or areas for
above ground picketing, but you may hold your horse and let it graze
in the field around the barns.

There is a wash station for the horses near the barns and spigots for water.

Bring buckets for watering, feed and clean-up, (or a wheel barrow)
pitchforks and the usual items for grooming. Don't forget your
authorization and membership cards.

Bring your weapons: lances for jousting rings and quintain, sword or
mace for heads and reeds. You may also want day shade and chairs and
tables since there will not be any provided on the site. The only
tables and chairs are those in the main hall where the feast will be
held. The field is a baseball diamond and has no shade it can also be
quite muddy if there has been any rain during the week prior to the
event.

Please bring a copy of your horses Coggins test results with you. If
crossing state lines, you must also bring a health certificate from
your veterinary. No horses will be unloaded from the trailer until the
MoTH has seen these papers. You may send photocopies or scans of these
papers with your registration. The health cert should be within the
last 30 days before the event. Horses coming from Northeast Virginia
or Eastern Maryland or Eastern Pennsylvania should provide a brief
history of all the locations their horse has been during the last six
months. Those that have been at any of the quarantined sites will not
be allowed to unload. WARNING: Virginia officials are stopping horse
trailers and looking at paperwork. Be sure yours is in order or they
can confiscate and quarantine your horses.

Rental Horse Riders:
There are currently no rental horses available for this event. Please
make arrangements with local horse owners in your home group to share
their horses and expenses of hauling their horse to the event.

If you wish to rent a horse, please contact the Marshal of the Horse
(MoTH) and inform her of your need so she can get an idea of how many
rental horses will be required. She will need the following
information for your rental horse reservation (There is no guarantee
that there will be rental horses available):

Your SCA and modern names
Your SCA riding level if authorized: beginner, intermediate, advanced,
Bannerat (Bannerat is for mounted combat, jousting and other
two-handed weapon forms- the "special" level in the SCA rules).
If not an authorized SCA rider, the level you wish to authorize at:
beginner (walk only), intermediate (walk or trot), advanced (walk,
trot or canter), bannerat (must be advanced first, then do special
authorization for mounted combat, archery, and jousting)
Your weight (so we can pair you up with a horse the right size for you)
Your age if under 18 years old
Email address
Phone number
Do not send any money for the rental horses at this time. The MoTH
will contact you and let you know if she found rental horses or not
and how much it will cost exactly.

Minors (those under 18 years old):
Minors should bring their own weapons scaled down for their size and
they should not have any metal tips on them. Minors must wear an ASTM
approved riding helmet and a parent or legal guardian must be watching
them at all times they are on the horse.

Lets say that again: a parent or legal guardian must be watching them
at all times they are on the horse.

Children as young as five may participate, providing they can
demonstrate they have control of the horse/pony they are riding and
they are already an authorized rider.

"Pony rides" are not allowed. No one who is not an authorized rider or
is not planning to authorize at the event will be allowed on a horse
or pony. All children must be accompanied by an adult while near the
horses or visiting the barn.

You MUST contact the MoTH prior to the event if you want to do a
regular minor authorization, however, due to a shortage of marshals,
there will be no authorizations at this event (unless marshal
availability changes between now and then).

Send the form below to Marshal of the Horse (MoTH):
THLady Brandwyn Alston of the Rift (Stella Brindle) 612 Jewell Avenue,
Portsmouth, VA 23701 or email to BrandwynAlston at gmail.com (757)
488-3597.

Rules to follow:
No smoking or alcohol in arena area when horses are present or in the barn area.
Please make sure to help leave the site clean. Clean up after your horses.
Horses must be attended by an adult at all times when they are not
secured in a stall. Portable stalls are not allowed, at this event. No
electric wire or tape fencing. Horses may be trailer tied for this
event during the day, but must be placed in a stall overnight. There
is no shade around the edge of the tourney field.
Stallions must be designated as such with yellow ribbons and MUST be
pre-registered. Known kickers or biters are not allowed.
Anyone engaging in unsafe practices or using punishment deemed
inappropriate will not be allowed to participate. The MOTH (Marshal of
the Horse) is the final authority on what is deemed inappropriate
behavior.

All riders, including those renting horses, are expected to help clean
up after the horses both on the field and in the barns and help to
care for the horses. Ground crew people will be needed to help pass
off weapons, reset the games and water both riders and horses. When
you are not riding, we ask that you help on the field as much as
possible. Those wishing to help as ground crew must be authorized,
this includes water bearers. Contact the MoTH if you need details
about authorizing as ground crew.

If you are sharing, please remember that the other persons need to get
as much time in the saddle as you do and that the horse needs to rest
and get water on occasion too.

What to wear: closed toed footwear preferably with a heel, long
pants, nothing dangly, or easily caught on pieces of harness. Approved
riding helmets are suggested, but not required, for those 18 and over.
No spurs on rental horses. Riders wishing to dress their rental horses
must consult the wrangler beforehand. For those bringing a horse, if
you "dress" your horse, please be sure it is used to the costume
before you get to the event.

What to bring: Chairs and day pavilions can be set up along side the
games area by the front of the baseball diamond for comfort of the
populace. Banners and other decorations for the games arena along the
fence are encouraged. Bring lances and swords for the games if you
have them. Rental horse riders may bring their own saddle and use it
providing the wrangler agrees and it fits their horse.

Cavalry web page at http://equestrian.atlantia.sca.org/ and rules from
