A&S Competitions at Highland River Melees!

Please note the Highland Foorde Baronial A&S Championship has been postponed
and will not happen at HRM.

What did they bring back from the Crusade? Competition

In their travels, the Crusaders acquired items or learned new techniques
that they took back to Europe. Therefore the main theme of A&S competition
will
center on these items and techniques that they adopted “as is” or
incorporated into already existing items and practices when they returned
home.
The four subcategories will be:

A. Items made of hard materials such as wood, clay, glass, and metal
B. Items made of soft materials such as fiber and paper
C. Edible items
D. Bardic

Note: There will be some materials such as leather that could fall into
either the hard or soft category. It will be up to the entrant’s discretion
as to
which category they wish to enter.

Documentation will be required showing the source and the subsequent use in
Europe. Please provide a one-page summary of the documentation.

Entries must be in by 1:00 pm. Judging will be 1:00 – 3:00.

Memorial Middle Eastern Eye Bead Competition - To Benefit the Susan G.
Komen Foundation

A great Atlantian and SCAdian has left us to whom many of us owe a debt of
gratitude. Mistress Caitlin graced us with her presence at Highland River
Melees both as a spectator and an A&S judge. Many of us owe our introduction to
hot glass to her As I am one of these, I, along with the Barony, feel it
would be a fitting tribute to her to have a Middle Eastern Eye Bead competition
at Highland River Melees. As the sponsor I am donating the prize of one
pound of glass including Double Helix, Satake, CIM, Lauscha, and Moretti to be
split between the two winners one in the novice group - under two years of bead
making - and one in the experienced group. Not only will one of the
competitors win, but also the Susan G. Komen Foundation will win, as it will receive
a donation from the competition. Judging of the beads will be by the
populace. Each bead will have a container beside it and the populace will vote by
making donations. The beads that garner the largest donation will
be the winner. The beads will be then be auctioned off as a group and funds
from the auction will also be donated to the Foundation. You do not need to
have documentation, you do not have to be present to enter, and your bead
can be your interpretation of a Middle Eastern Eye bead. You do not even have
to be an Atlantian! Please either bring your entry to Highland River Melees
or send it marked novice or experienced with your SCA and modern name and
address by June 5th to:

Donna Hoblit
10693 Salem Ave.
Thurmont, MD 21788

Remember the beads will not be returned. Thank you!

Vivats in memorium to Mistress Caitlin!

Lady Elena di Salaparuta, A&S Coordinator for Highland River Melees
