Come, come, whomever you are,
Wanderer, idolater, worshipper of fire,
Come even though you have broken your vows a thousand times,
Come, and come yet again.
Ours is not a caravan of despair
Rumi (Mawlana Jalal-ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi called Rumi, Persian Poet,
1207-1273)
The East and the West have been discovering and rediscovering each other for
centuries. Rome knew of
strange peoples to the East they called Seres, the Silk People, who created
the ethereal fabric favored by
wealthy Roman women. The Roman Senate tried to ban silk on moral and
economic grounds. Gold poured
from the Empire to purchase silk from the middlemen-Parthians and Roman
wives clad in the sheerest fabric
were rather on display more then some husbands felt was strictly necessary.
Tigers, panthers and horses, paper, spices and jewels, slaves, musical
instruments and religions traveled
from one end of the known world to the other in the name of commerce and
changed history in remarkable
ways. Come explore some of those ways with us as we celebrate Sacred Stone’s
Baronial Birthday in
opulent style. Aug 24-26 at the Elchenburg Castle details found at
