Emprise of the Ring of the Athanor

Gulf Wars 2007

11 AM Thursday March 15

The tradition of the Emprise comes from Gulf Wars where for over the past
15  years, they have been held in Meridies annually.  Many of the Gulf Wars
Emprises have been sponsored by the Company of St. Anne;   in Trimaris,
others have been sponsored by the Company of the Azure Rose.  You may have
heard of the Meridies laurel/Pelican , Master Johannes the Black of the
Athanor, a true Renaissance man, who had performed all the research into how
to conduct a period Equestrian Tournament. He wrote the Meridies Book of the
Horse (available from Svana ) as well as several other articles on many
other topics you can find posted on the Meridies website.   The point is
that the Pas d Armes as conducted within the SCA is actually based on the
Sport Jousting Tournaments that took place in the High Middle Ages. Our SCA
Pas d' Armes are Heraldic spectacles that have been sponsored initially by
the Company of St George, an SCA Tournament company that reveres  the
chivalric ideals and spectacles of the Middle ages.  The Equestrian Emprises
serve the same function in that they make us more than costumed gymkhana
riders---again the emphasis is on Display and Chivalry in the Lists.     We
perform the Hastiludes (spear contests) -- activities that are quite
exciting to watch and to herald. We dress our horses in Heraldic  caparisons
and carry our own heraldic banners/pennants.  Lets face it, we equestrians
are big on heraldic display  This is an exciting venue for Heralds as well
as Equestrians.... A chance where we can all meet and show off for the
populace...and Ladies of the Rose, who grace the Befrois and grant largesse
to the Competitors.
