[MR] 12th night

There are some REALLY good practical reasons why this has not happened, but
possibly the biggest one is the "open mike" issue. Sound systems that are
capable of picking up what the royalty mean to have heard by all those
present and what those receiving awards say in return have a nasty tendency
to pick up a LOT of stuff that you would not wish to have heard by "the
world".
Sound systems have been proposed for the last 25 years at various large
events. (I can remember an offer by someone then living in Atlantia made
when I was War Herald for Pennsic back in the mid-1980's.)
However, on almost every occasion when this has been tried in a large venue
I understand that there has been one or more "open mike" issues that have
not only "ruined the mood" but also been hurtful to one or more individuals.
As a result, heralds have worked really hard not only to be audible
themselves but also to help royalty and others to learn how to project and
be audible as well.
But you also have to remember that how we select our royalty and skill in
combat and ability to inspire a lord to excel do NOT guarantee audibility in
court! (Though our current royalty are in fact considerably better than
most and a good part of the problem this weekend was the nature of the
acoustics in the various venues for court.)

Greetings,
I have been sitting here in the tavern, quietly sipping my mead for a long
time, but Aminah's reply reminds me of something I have been thinking about
for a while:
Forgive me if I am speaking out of turn. Although I have been in the SCA for
six or so years, I haven't been really active until this last year, so I am
still learning.
I know how hard we try to create an atmosphere of authenticity at events
with our garb and related accessories, but I wish that at court we could
have a microphone/PA system of some sort. I can't tell you how many courts
I've sat through with only a vague idea of what was said. I hear laughter,
but don't know what the joke was. I think this could be done without being
too obtrusive (using wireless mikes for the royals and herald) and it would
add to everyones enjoyment of the proceedings. I think people in the back
would be less inclined to talk if they could hear what was happening.
I don't know if this has been done in any other kingdoms, and I may be
speaking blasphemy, but I only mention it as a suggestion for all of us to
have a better experience in service to the dream.
Respectfully,
