Normally I stay away from this stuff, but not today.
From the SCA.org:
"The Society Minister of Arts and Sciences is responsible for fostering the study of period culture and technology, and methods for producing historically accurate artifacts and performances."
At what point does it distinguish between the arts of war and the arts of peace?
Last year there was an A&S competition concerning historical sword work of the renaissance period. There was also a demo of the Historical Combat Studies that Atlantia is trying to foster. Are these not Arts and Sciences? Are they less important to the A&S community then say woodworking? Or even singing?
Many of the names of the good folk who have voiced their opinions against martial activities for this weekend are the same names I recognize who have been such supporters of the martial arts within this kingdom. And that confounds me most of all.
We are fast approaching March, a month named for Mars, the Roman god of war. This kingdom will be sending many down to the Gulf Wars, while down there they will be representing the honour of this very kingdom. Should our men at arms not be allowed to have some preparation before going off to war?
The lack of support for ALL of the available activities of the SCA in general and Atlantia in particular saddens me greatly. And to those who would boycott this weekend because there will be an activity you do not wish to be apart of, does nothing but harm. It harms the event, the A&S community, and this kingdom. And for shame to you who cause such harm to your own kingdom.
