Greetings unto the populace of Fair Atlantia from Lady Iohanna filia Iacobi!

On the heels of other instructors and attendees of University this
past weekend, I would like to add my deep thanks and hearty
appreciation to the gentles who organize, staff, and attend University
-- it is a privilege to benefit from your efforts and knowledge, and
an honor to share what I can as an instructor.

For those who attended or wished to attend my course -- "Imperial
Roman Clothing: Coronation and Beyond" -- and would like a color PDF
of my handouts, please contact me at this email address. (Feel free
to distribute copies of PDFs or printouts!)

My handouts provide the following:
- Overview of how to achieve the Roman look for Coronation by
"shopping" in one's closets and fabric stash
- Construction and wear instructions for women's and men's clothing
- Overview of children's clothing and accessories
- Discussion of hair and cosmetics, including suggested sources for supplies
- Examples of accessories, including shoes and jewelry (extants and merchants)
- Lists of textile and color terms from Roman sources (e.g., color
names, textile descriptions and uses)
- Glossary of terms and annotated bibliography

This coming April, Their Royal Highnesses Valharic and Arielle will
Process in Imperial Roman tradition, and They have invited the
populace at large to join in the theme and attend in the Roman style.
Their Royal Highnesses invite Royal Peers to dress in the Imperial
purple [1] and the populace at large to join in the style appropriate
to their rank and preference.

Following is a "minimalist approach" clothing articles to achieve an
Imperial Roman look for Procession: essentially both men and women
wore a loose-fitting belted tunic under a long wrap draped around the
body. My handouts include information about styles, textiles, colors,
and so on.

=> Men
-- White for fomal events, some with purple accents; colors perfectly
appropriate as well!
-- TUNIC = short-sleeved mid-calf length tunic; belted
-- WRAP = toga, 4+ yards of middle weight fabric

=> Women
-- Colors are appropriate! Gown or overgown will achieve "look" of
long gown under wrap
-- GOWN = ankle / floor-length "tunica," similar to "bog dress" /
peplos designs with open top edge pinned / sewn closed (easiest to sew
/ "closet shop")
-- Overgown = ankle / floor-length "stola," similar to "apron dress"
in having narrow straps / bands over shoulders
-- WRAP = palla, approximately 4 yards of lightweight fabric

[1] Imperial purple is not the bright violet-purple we are familiar
with in modern colors; it more closely resembles burgundy / wine /
garnet, or crimson with a touch of blue. Baroness Magdalena de
Hazebrouck has *excellent* information on her site:

My intention is to serve as a resource to all members of populace who
wish to participate in the Procession as a "Roman citizen" -- please
do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Should your local group have an A&S night, for example, and you would
like to discuss / work on Roman clothing, please contact me -- I may
be available by phone to talk through my handouts and provide some
"tech support" for your projects.

I will be attending the following events, and will plan to be
available to anyone who wishes to discuss Roman clothing, accessories,
and so on:
- Feb 9-11 -- Windmasters Hill -- Ymir -- Seek me field-side in Master Kevin of
Thornbury and Maestra Giuliana Salviati's pavilion
- Feb 17 -- Dun Carraig -- Baronial Investiture & A Day in the Middle East
